It only took about ten minutes for us to walk to the Wolf’s Lair. As I expected, Gwyneth’s Infiniti was parked in the employee lot. Unfortunately, so was Katelyn’s Prius. What was Katelyn doing here, filling Gwyneth’s head with more lies about Brayden? I sprinted ahead; pushing through the door before Brayden even crossed the street. Completely disregarding the other manager who was at the counter, I pushed my way back to the office. To my luck, Gwyneth was inside, alone. I banged my knuckles against the doorframe. She looked up from a stack of papers.

“Anika, what is it?” She asked, motioning for me to come inside.

I sat across from her, in the same spot I occupied when I was comforting Brayden only the day before. “You can’t fire him.”

“Who?”

“Brayden Niklaus. I don’t know what Katelyn told you about him but it’s a lie.”

“Are you sure? She said some pretty nasty things.”

“Tell me what she said and I can tell you whether or not it’s true.”

“I thought you said you weren’t closey-close with him.”

“He’s my friend. If he did anything, I’d know about it.”

“Apparently there’s a warrant out for his arrest.”

“What?! From where?”

“The San Diego police department. Katelyn has a friend over there who mentioned something about a crime that was committed some time ago. Brayden seems to be the culprit.”

“This happened a while ago?”

“In 2006.”

“That was five years ago. Are they sure it was him?”

“Katelyn and her friend are positive of it.”

“How do they know it was Brayden? What proof do they have?”

“Photographic evidence. They have a picture of the culprit. Apparently, Brayden Niklaus is on their top ten most wanted list.”

“That can’t be. Brayden is not a criminal.”

“Is he here?”

I nodded. “He walked over with me.”

Gwyneth rose out of the chair and made her way to the door. “Brayden Niklaus, office now!!!” She shouted at the top of her lungs.

Once she made her call she sat back down and waited. Seconds later, Brayden appeared in the doorway.

“You called my name?” He questioned. Just from the look on his face, I knew he’d heard everything.

Gwyneth sighed. “Brayden, you’re one of my best managers. You know I don’t like doing this but it has to be done. I want you to know the real reason why you were fired.”

“So, it wasn’t inappropriate conduct?”

She shook her head. “It’s about your warrant. I have to turn you in.”

“I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You’re on the San Diego police department’s top ten most wanted list.”

“That’s impossible. I’ve never been to San Diego.”

Gwyneth gave him a suspicious look.

“I can get you my records. When did this happen exactly?”

“October twenty-fifth, 2006.”

“I was still in high school at that time, right here in Canis Falls. I can get you a copy of my school records.”

“Brayden, they’re absolutely certain it’s you. They have a picture of the culprit and everything.”

“Do you have the picture? I’d like to see it.”

Gwyneth nodded. “Katelyn turned it over to me when she told me about the warrant.” She shuffled through a pile of papers on her desk before handing one to me.
